Damon Lindelof is offering more insights about Ridley Scott's next film "Prometheus," an epic sci-fi feature set to start filming this year.

"Prometheus" will include strong links to Scott's 1979 film "Alien" and will follow mankind during its infancy of manned deep-space flights.

Lindelof ("Lost") penned the project's script based on an idea from Scott and an initial draft by Jon Spaihts.

Scott promises a "really tough, really nasty" film that involves gods and engineers of space.

"Obviously, Ridley Scott has not made a science fiction movie in 25 years, since 'Blade Runner'; so the idea that he’s returning to this genre is huge," Lindelof said recently on "The Kevin Pollak Chat Show."

Unfolding prior to the events of "Alien," the prequel will forge its own ambitious direction, according to Lindelof.

"I’ve always felt that really good prequels should be original movies," he explained. "And the sequels to those prequels should not be the movie which already exists. … Show me something else which I can’t guess the possible outcome of. There is no suspense in inevitability.

"So a true prequel should essentially proceed the events of the original film, but be about something entirely different, feature different characters, have an entirely different theme, although it takes place in that same world.

"And thats the movie that Ridley wanted to make. And when you’re working with an auteur, you basically just shut your mouth and listen and try to transcribe and channel the vision of that person, and get out of the way."

In addition to directing the film, Scott will produce it along with Walter Hill, Tony Scott and David Giler.

"Prometheus," which is set for a June 8, 2012 premiere from Fox, stars Charlize Theron, Idris Elba, Sean Harris, Kate Dickie, Logan Marshall-Green.
