'Supernatural' - The Born-Again Identity

Castiel returns to save Sam

This review may contain spoilers

Demon Meg (Rachel Miner) gets all the best lines ("I believe in the little tree topper." and "That was beautiful, Clarence.") as Castiel (Misha Collins) reappears in order to save Sam (Jared Padalecki).

Sam's issues, though, incessant "noise" from Lucifer (Mark Pellegrino), seem like a minor, small scale thing to drive him to the brink of death. Whatever. It seems that after his "death" in the reservoir, Castiel was washed up, sans memory, at the feet of a devout woman, Daphne (Johanna Marlowe), who married him and named him Emanuel. No doubt God's modified version of teleporting his favorite up to an airplane when things get out of hand. Through a reasonable chain of events, including a nudge from Ghost Bobby, Dean (Jensen Ackles) learns of Emanuel, who has been healing people and goes hoping he can help Sam.

Meanwhile, Sam's mental hell have given him insomnia and sent him out into the streets where he gets hit by a car. In the hospital, they are trying to treat his mental issues, unsuccessfully. Also in the mental ward is a young lady (Kacey Rohl) being haunted by her dead brother (Kal James), who is actively trying to make her join him. Fortunately, this is an easy case and even greatly limited and impaired, Sam is able to deal with the problem.

Demons have gotten wind of the unusual Emanuel and are accumulating around the situation. Even though Crowley had decreed the Winchesters are not to be interfered with as they deal with the leviathans, the demons have decided the Winchesters' lack of progress on the leviathan front gives them license to pursue the possibly more valuable Emanuel. Meg saves Dean when he is getting overwhelmed and attaches herself to the party. Castiel makes short work of the many demons who are waiting at the hospital for him and sacrifices his mental well-being, taking Sam's mental Hell into himself.

Castiel has been living a normal-ish human life with Daphne with no memories of his divine life. As he vanquishes demon after demon, he remembers everything, but it seems he forgot Daphne. Do the boys go and explain to her what happened, or does Dean end up with kidnapping charges?

Points Of Interest

1. Amnesiac Castiel was healing physical problems and mental sicknesses.

2. Demon Meg takes an unspecified job at the hospital where Castiel is now institutionalized. Please don't match-make these two. Please.

What Worked

The medical response to Sam's condition seemed reasonable, although one is left curious what surgical but not-a-lobotomy solution the doctor (Bill Dow) was considering.

The Emanuel personality was quite distinct from both Castiel and Jimmy; although, it showed a bit of Castiel's humor at the end there.

What Didn't Work

If the demons who wanted Emanuel were waiting at the hospital where Sam was, expecting Dean to bring Emanuel there, why leave Castiel at the same hospital even if "all the demons who knew are dead"? Why take that chance?

Emanuel doesn't dispute the idea that he doesn't eat, which Daphne would surely have had checked out, if true. Did Emanuel perform any ... husbandly duties? There had been speculation earlier in the series if he even has the equipment (which Daphne would definitely have had checked out if not).

For a fan that wanted to see more Castiel, it all ties up too neat and tidy with Cas written into an out of the way corner at the end.
