Genre favorites "American Horror Story" and "The Walking Dead" pulled in a combined 20 nominations today for the 64th Primetime Emmy Awards.

FX's "American Horror Story" scored 17 nods, tying it with "Mad Men" for the most by any series this year. The nominations included Outstanding Miniseries, Lead Actress for Connie Britton, Supporting Actress for both Jessica Lange and Frances Conroy and Supporting Actor for Denis O'Hare.

In technical categories, the series scored nods for Art Direction in two separate episodes, Main Title Design, Costumes, Casting, Editing, Stunt Coordination, Hairstyling, Makeup, Prosthetic Makeup, Sound Editing and Sound Mixing.

"It’s nice that when you sleep with a rubber man there’s a reward at the end," said Britton ("Friday Night Lights"), a three-time Emmy nominee, in an interview with The New York Times. "I have some really wonderful things to add to the special skills section [of my resume]. So thank you, Ryan Murphy."

Murphy ("Glee") co-created the series with Brad Falchuk.

On AMC, "The Walking Dead" Outstanding Prosthetic Makeup (Greg Nicotero and KNB EFX), Outstanding Visual Effects (VFX) and Outstanding Sound Editing (Jerry Ross) for the second straight year.

In 2011, the zombie series earned a Golden Globe nomination for Best Television Series - Drama and won the 2011 Emmy Award for Outstanding Prosthetic Makeup.

Glen Mazzara ("The Shield") executive produces the series.

The 64th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards will air Sept. 23 on ABC.
