Reviewing television shows, movies and other forms of media can be one of the easiest jobs in the world. It can also be one of the hardest. Everything depends on the production in question. To have a fair and balanced review, there needs to be at least a little good and a little bad to say. If the show happens to strike a positive chord repeatedly, the reviews can be downright boring. After all, no one wants to hear that a show was fantastic week in and week out.
That’s the crux of my problem with “Supernatural.”
As most RD readers know, I’ve been charged with reviewing “Supernatural” this season. For regulars, it’s become painfully obvious that I suck at keeping up with blow-by-blow reviews on this show.
So, you’re probably asking, “What gives?”
No, I don’t hate “Supernatural.” On the contrary, I have loved every minute of it this season. I cannot remember enjoying watching a television show more since Joss Whedon rolled out “Buffy” and then “Angel.”
“Supernatural” has all the ingredients of a very good sanitized-for-your-viewing-pleasure television show. It’s sometimes dark, sometimes scary, quite often very funny and has just enough of a running storyline thread to make it interesting.
Take the most recent episode, “The Monster at the End of This Book.” In this installation, Sam and Dean Winchester discover their secret life of demon bashing isn’t so secret. It seems a novelist has been writing their life stories nearly verbatim for quite some time. What ensues is intriguing, comical and even a bit creepy. The guy turns out to be a “prophet,” on the lines of Luke – the biblical Luke. This means that he has divine protection, which turns out to be a good thing when Lilith turns out to be in town. Thanks to Chuck the Prophet, the boys are able to run her off and they all live to fight another day.
Again, it was just another brilliant, well-balanced episode. This season has been chockfull of them. While this makes for incredible viewing, it just isn’t conducive for great reviews.
So, if you’ve been missing “Supernatural” reviews, I do apologize. There’s just not much to say other than tune in for a darn fun ride!
“Supernatural” airs Thursdays at 9 p.m. EST on The CW.
